NFTs make it to Hollywood

A world of women makes it to Hollywood

If you've been around Web 3 long enough or participated in the movement, you're well aware that NFTs (non fungible tokens) are only powerful because of the communities they are backed by. Many of which have stemmed from missions around equity and identity inclusion. 🙏

World of Women (WoW) is probably the most popular women-led crypto purveyor. It launched last July with thousands of unique character NFTs all created by women artists — and those pieces are now going for six figures💵. It grossed over $2M in a matter of hours upon its release in July; then moved into the secondary resale market after booming in mid-October for having caught the attention from the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes, Logal Paul to early Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) holders. 🦍

Reese Witherspoon’s women-focused media company, Hello Sunshine, is teaming up with WoW to create a universe based on WoW’s NFT characters…Think films , TV shows, and artwork inspired by crypto babes. Yes, we’re getting served web3 vibes by Ms. Elle Woods, JD ⚖️, herself.

“Hello Sunshine ☀️ has been changing the narrative for women in Hollywood and we know they can play an instrumental role in shaping the narrative for women in the NFT space,” said Yam Karkai, co-founder and artist for World of Women.

It sounds like we’re getting Gen Alpha's version of the Powerpuff Girls 👧🏼👧🏻👧🏽. But instead of sugar, spice, and everything nice, these ladies are made up of bits, bytes, and ownership rights.

Quick News Bites

Lots of phish in the OpenSea 🎣

A hacker 🧑‍💻 stole millions worth of NFTs from OpenSea, the NFT platform/marketplace. In total, the hack affected 32 users. We know that the hacker flipped the NFTs they stole to make more cash. It seems like they had buyers remorse given they returned a decent amount of the NFTs back to the original owners, even giving an additional ~$150k of Ethereum to one of the victims. It seems like they realized there were too many baby fish in the sea. But how did OpenSea even get hacked? Co-founder/CEO Devin Finzer says that the users were phished.

Usually hackers will send emails, texts, or links that ask the victims to reveal info that can be used to log into an account or gain access to other important stuff. HOWEVER, some of the victims realized that their stolen NFTs had all been migrated to OpenSeamanually and believe that could be the root of the issue. If this were a phishing attack like the CEO claims, OpenSea is off the hook. But if it’s an issue with the manual migration, it’s probably OpenSea’s fault. Sketch? Yes. Fishy? Defs. 🐟

Bullet journals for depressed investors 📒

A wee history lesson for the day: D-Day Notes get their name from Eisenhower’s “just in case” press release that would’ve been published if D-Day was a failure for the Allied forces. The task is to preemptively address your failures, but instead of the subject being the Normandy invasions during WW2, it’s your investments 📈.

D-Day Notes are kind of the opposite of bullet journaling because you’re assuming you’ll flop instead of hyping yourself up 😞, but if you’re the kind of person to assume the worst and hope for the best, this might be your jam??? This process is supposed to remind yourself why you made the investment decisions you did and force you to spend time learning from your mistakes, ultimately making you a better investor.

Warren Buffet had a change of heart about crypto 💞

Investing legend Warren Buffet might’ve changed his mind about crypto. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, bought $1B shares of NuBank, a Brazilian neobank that dabbles in crypto funds. Note that the man previously referred to Bitcoin as “rat poison” 🐀. If the Oracle of Omaha 🔮 is on his A-game, it might be time to throw some cash into Coinbase.

WSJ’s (paywalled) guide to tax season

This tax season is going to be a hot mess. Actually, who am I kidding? Every tax season is kind of tragiqué. We gotta thank the folks at the WSJ for saving our butts 🍑 Their annual guideto taxes keeps us (somewhat) sane during this trying time. Highlights of this year’s tax guide: how to report stimmys, making the most of child tax credits, and changes to income tax rates. Unfortunately, it does require a 💵 WSJ subscription 💵 to download the guide, but at least you get access to financial news and cryptic crosswords? If you do sub, you can find the tax guide here.
